January 01, 2017 Identifying Lagging Areas for Investment
This project sought to promote development, particularly in areas that have high economic potential but low performance. To this end, LCPS first identified the level of development for each of the 26 qadas using night light vision as a proxy to GDP as well as economic performance using indicators such as access to markets, human capital, and density, among others. Once three qadas with low performance and high potential were selected—Zahle, Minieh-Dinieh—we identified key bottlenecks that are hampering their potential. The outcome should assist the World Bank and the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR) in guiding investments in these areas.
