Divisive Rule

After long-ruling autocrats were toppled in Tunisia and Egypt in early 2011, a wave of public protests against authoritarianism, corruption, and state in-competence swept across the Arab world. In due course the Arab Spring reached four deeply divided societies whose recent history had seen ethnic and sectarian conflict and sometimes extreme violence.
