What are Lebanon’s Challenges in Becoming an Oil Producer? For those who missed the opportunity to attend LCPS’s oil and gas conference “How Are Resource-Dependent MENA Countries Coping with Low Oil Prices? Governance, Macroeconomics and Diversification” on 2 November 2017, we are posting a video of the final session online. The conference tackled a range of issues concerning challenges in MENA countries associated with lower oil prices and calls for diversification of economies. The final panel of the day “What are Lebanon’s Challenges in Becoming an Oil Producer?” specifically addressed the oil and gas sector in Lebanon and issues facing it as Lebanon joins the club of petroleum-producing states. The panel, which was moderated by LCPS Executive Director Sami Atallah, included Mohamed Alem, LCPS chairperson and senior partner at Alem & Associates; Wissam Chbat, president of the Lebanese Petroleum Administration; Bassam Fattouh, LCPS research fellow and director of the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies; Alexandra Gillies, advisor with the Natural Resource Governance Institute; David Mihalyi, economic analyst with the Natural Resource Governance Institute; and Daniel Garrote Sanchez, a senior researcher with the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies.
