The Middle East: Transition, Disintegration, and Regional Rivalry Since 2011, the Arab world has gone through a particularly striking transition that saw autocratic leaders fall from power but failed to lead to democratic governance. What has emerged since are wars and the disintegration of some states, in addition to counter coups that have largely diminished hopes for democratization. Throughout this time, conflicts from Yemen to Libya, and most poignantly in Iraq and Syria, took on a regional and international tone, highlighted by the Iranian-Saudi rivalry. LCPS and IDRC invited two guests to discuss these issues: Dr. Paul Salem, the vice president for policy and research at the Middle East Institute and Dr. Emile Hokayem, a senior fellow of Middle East Security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Manama, Bahrain.
